Message to the Presidents of Sudan and South Sudan Your Excellencies, The peoples of Sudan and South Sudan share more than borders. We share history, blood, culture, and a destiny that cannot be escaped by separation or force. Today, both nations stand at a painful crossroads—where continued division, war, and political deadlock threaten not only governments, but the future of generations yet unborn. Leadership is tested not in times of comfort, but in moments of national crisis. The suffering of civilians, the displacement of millions, the collapse of economies, and the fragmentation of national armies demand urgent moral and political courage. No victory achieved through violence will ever outweigh the cost paid by innocent citizens. We therefore urge you, as Heads of State, to take the following historic steps: Commit publicly to an immediate and permanent ceasefire, enforced through joint monitoring mechanisms with regional and international guarantors. Place national interest above personal or factional power, and open inclusive political dialogue involving civil society, women, youth, traditional leaders, and opposition groups. Unify and professionalize the armed forces, ending the use of militias and parallel command structures that weaken the state and fuel instability. Respect constitutional governance and democratic transition, allowing the people—through free and credible elections—to choose their leaders. Restore trust between Sudan and South Sudan, recognizing that peace in one nation strengthens the other, while conflict in one inevitably spills across borders. History will not remember how long leaders ruled—but whether they chose peace over pride, unity over division, and justice over fear. You have the rare opportunity to be remembered as leaders who stopped the cycle of war and opened a new chapter of reconciliation, dignity, and shared prosperity. The people are waiting. The region is watching. The future depends on your courage. With respect and hope, Michael Awakwaj Africa Unity Voice
