Safe Traditional Wood Stairway Redesign

My office building has a single, very steep interior stair that makes tenants nervous and does nothing for the look of the space. I want to re-imagine it in a traditional style, built primarily in wood, and—most importantly—make it much safer. There is unused floor area alongside the current run, so the new design can introduce one or more intermediate landings to reduce the pitch. Continuous handrails on both sides are a must. What I need from you: • Concept options that show how the existing run can be broken into shorter flights with landings. • A traditional aesthetic—think classic profiles, warm timber finishes, balanced proportions—presented through plan views, elevations, and at least one perspective or 3-D rendering so I can illustrate the idea to partners. • Basic construction drawings or sketches that a local contractor can price from: tread/riser dimensions, stringer details, handrail sections, and recommended non-slip treatments even though timber is the main surface. • Confirmation that the new layout will meet standard commercial code requirements for rise, run, headroom, and guard height (I’m in the U.S., so follow IBC guidelines). Include your preferred file format (PDF, DWG, SketchUp, etc.) and a short outline of how many revisions you allow; two iterative rounds should be enough. I’ll supply photos, existing dimensions, and any other site data you request as soon as we start. Looking forward to seeing how you can turn a hazard into a handsome, code-compliant centerpiece.
